What is Select (House League) Baseball?

The Guelph Royals Select (House League) program is an intermediate program that allows our house league membership the opportunity to supplement their house league experience with further development opportunities as well as an introduction to more structured competition.

Our Select (House League) teams join the Inter County Select loop and play games against other local centres.  In addition to the Select loop play, teams traditionally participate in tournament play throughout Ontario.

  • Each team is led by a coach who has been selected by our GMBA selection committee for their baseball knowledge, leadership and dedication to helping our youth grow not only as skilled baseball players but as strong citizens within our community.
  • All coaches are provided access to the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and are screened per the

Who is Able to Join the Royals?

The Select (House League) program is perfect for the house league player who wants a little extra baseball as well the player who hopes to transition to the rep program in the future.

In order to qualify for the select program, the player must;
- register for the GMBA house league program
- register for the select tryouts.
-- must also attend their House League matches and practices throughout the season as well.

Unlike the rep program, the select program has no residency requirements so it is open to anyone.

The Select Season

  • Tryouts for the 2026 GMBA Select (House League) program are tentatively being scheduled for Saturdays starting Mid-Late October through November for the various age groups. Tryout dates and times will vary by age group.
    • Details will be posted on the website and social media by end the of September.
  • Following tryouts, a team may choose to participate in some indoor workouts using some of our indoor training partners like the WAR ROOM, Marden’s Royal Distributing Athletic Performance Centre, University of Guelph, etc.
  • The regular season begins in late May – early June and runs until early-August.
  • Each team can expect approximately 10 regular season games (depending on the age level and number of teams in the loop).  On average, this works out to one game (either Home in Guelph, or Away to another centre) and one practice per week (both typically falling on Saturday & Sunday).
    • This schedule is in tandem with each players GMBA House League commitments as well with a game in Guelph and practice as well throughout the weeknights.
  • The season wraps up with league playoffs late August and provincial playoffs (if the team qualifies) taking place typically Labour Day weekend.
  • Select teams also participate in tournaments throughout the summer.  Typically teams play in 2 to 3 tournaments.  Tournament locations are in Ontario, with specific locations and dates determined by the team.

What Does the Fee Structure Look Like?

Players will be required to register for the house league program at their age-appropriate division.  Select teams will then be invoiced for any costs incurred.  These costs include but are not limited to coaches training, equipment, diamond and umpire costs for games/practices.

Select teams also have additional costs for player and coach development, indoor training and tournaments. A typical select season costs $500-1000 per player, plus select uniform costs and House League fees.
