Why Umpire with GMBA?

GMBA is committed to supporting and developing our umpires.  GMBA umpires not only receive OBA training and certification, but we also provide guidance and support throughout the development process.  Mentors and Supervisors work with new umpires throughout the season. GMBA is also among the highest-paying centers in the ICBA. In addition, GMBA is the home center for five locally developed National Certified umpires. 

There really is no better way to spend a summer evening than being paid to watch a baseball game from right on the field.  If you are interested in umpiring, please let us know how we can support your journey.

Registration Process

For the 2025 season, players born in 2013 or earlier are eligible to train as an umpire.  GMBA will be covering the cost of the level 1 umpire clinic for incoming umpires.  Please fill out the form on our registration page to express your interest in taking the course.  

Umpires must register with GMBA  and with OBA (link to Baseball Ontario Website).

Association Expectations

  • Late season T-Ball, Rookie Ball House League

  • 3-6 games per month

  • Basic Positioning (P1, P2, P3 and P4)

  • Rules knowledge (basic understanding of the game of baseball)

  • How and when to move to the next position (90-degree angle, Pivot, getting out from behind home plate)

  • Basic Mechanics (Out/Safe, Ball/Strike)

  • Flyball coverage areas

  • Fair/Foul Responsibilities and Definitions

  • Successful evaluation needed for advancement

  • Rookie Ball House League & Rep and Mosquito House League

  • 1-2 games a week

  • All previous requirements

  • Rules knowledge (Infield Fly, overthrow, live/dead ball)

  • Proper Timing (allowing the play to happen)

  • Proper Voice (Loud, Clear, Confident)

  • Successful evaluation needed for advancement

  • Rookie Ball Rep, Mosquito House League & Rep, Peewee House League

  • 1-3 games a week

  • All previous requirements

  • Rules knowledge (Contact, reentry, balk)

  • First to Third rotations

  • Advanced flyball mechanics

  • Signals

  • Successful evaluation needed for advancement

  • Mosquito House League & Rep, Peewee House League & Rep, Bantam House League

  • 1-3 games per week

  • All previous requirements

  • Rules knowledge (Interference, Obstruction, Scoring a run)

  • Mechanics review

  • Game management techniques

  • Successful evaluation needed for advancement

  • Peewee Rep, Bantam House League & Rep

  • 1-4 games per week

  • All previous requirements

  • Rules knowledge (Batting out of order, EP, DH)

  • Situational management

  • Plays at the plate

  • Successful evaluation needed for advancement

  • Peewee Rep, Bantam House League & Rep, Midget House League, Midget tier 2 (special circumstances only)

  • 1-4 games a week

  • All previous requirements

  • Tag up responsibilities

  • Mastery of skill

  • Understanding of the three-umpire system

  • Successful evaluation at Tournament or Championship Weekend (needed for advancement)

 Umpire Equipment


As covered in the level 1 and 2 clinics, umpires will need the following:

indicator, ball bag, plate brush, jersey, plain black hat, protective equipment, grey pants, black shoes, black belt and black socks.

Grey pants (dress type that shin guards can fit underneath), black (or mostly black) shoes - can be baseball cleats, a black belt, and black socks are not available for purchase through GMBA.
